MAURICIE

Located between the Laurentian Plain and the Canadian Shield, the Mauricie region is 40,000 square kilometres of pure nature. Wild flora and fauna cover more than three-quarters of the area. Once home to log drivers and the cradle of the Canadian steel industry, the Mauricie region bears the traces of a rich past, including the Saint-Maurice forge, the Notre-Dame-du-Cap sanctuary, the Chemin du Roy (almost 100 kilometres of which cuts through the Mauricie) and Trois-Rivières, one of the oldest cities in North America, whose historic quarter is best seen from the seat of a bike.

There is a fork in the Route verte in the Mauricie region. The first prong follows the Chemin du Roy (Route 138) and runs alongside Lake St. Pierre, a broad basin in the St. Lawrence that is part of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves. The second plays fast and loose with the twists and turns of the Saint-Maurice River, which it crisscrosses before heading for La Mauricie National Park, for a total of 81 kilometres of bikeways and roads.
