MONTÉRÉGIE

A land of apples and cider, the Montérégie is rich in other agricultural delights as well: wines, cheeses, maple products, mead, fine chocolates and other culinary treats pour forth from the region known as “the garden of Québec.” Third in terms of the number of historical sites among Québec regions and right next door to Montréal, the Montérégie is essentially flat, geographically speaking, making it an ideal destination for more a contemplative and leisurely ride.

In the Montérégie, the Route verte features six individual yet interlinked routes: the enchanting Soulanges path, which runs alongside the canal of the same name before wending its way through wooded areas and connecting to Ontario’s Waterfront Trail; the Vallée des Forts, a heritage route that provides access to the New York State Bike Route; the Canal-de-Chambly path, which is built on top of an old towpath and allows cyclists to admire the meandering Richelieu River; Montérégiades I and II, which lead to the Eastern Townships by way of farms and orchards; and the Campagnarde trail, a green link between the Eastern Townships and the Centre-du-Québec region. For cyclists starting out from Montréal, the Montégérie route is also the gateway to an extended Québec City getaway.
