Practical Tips

Before You Set Out

  • Check your brakes, tires, gears and other bike components
  • Take your bicycle in for a pre-trip tune-up
  • Take a test spin to make sure you are comfortable riding with what you’ll be carrying
  • Place the heaviest items at the bottom of your bags if possible
  • Pack a multifunction bicycle tool and a flat tire kit for minor repairs
  • Don’t forget a roll of duct tape, which will come in handy for a variety of uses
  • Bring a sufficient amount of water and food
  • Factor in extra time for unexpected stops (glitches, scenic detours, etc.)
  • Travelling alone? Leave your itinerary with someone

On the Road

  • Stay alert and avoid distractions
  • Obey the rules of the road and comply with all posted signs
  • Ride with the flow of traffic, single file, on the right-hand side of the road
  • Always pass on the left
  • Use hand signals to indicate turns and stops
  • Slow down in the presence of pedestrians
  • When stopping, pull to the right edge of the road
  • Be visible at all times
  • Make sure your helmet fits snugly
  • Check your bicycle regularly: make sure your tire pressure is adequate, your chain is well lubricated, your spokes are secure, your brake pads are in good condition – and keep an eye out for potential mechanical problems
